my family has gone to monterey for a vacation almost every year for about 12 years. at times we have tried other places but it never seems quite right. this is what we do:
we arrive at this rental house on the beach with all of our clothes, food, water in tow.
we open a bottle of champagne and drink it on the deck while we watch the sun set over the bay
we cook a meal of locally caught fish and locally grown artichokes and drink wine
we build a fire in the fireplace and listen to the waves
we talk or play a game or watch an old movie
we sleep
we awaken and stare at the sea
we swim or play tennis or run through the waves
we talk about going into carmel or cannery row or to the aquarium, we never do
we take a walk on the dunes
we trek to Phil's Fish House and buy a quart of clam chowder and bring it back to our deck to watch the sun set
we build a fire
we sleep
there will always be a part about this whole process that i can never articulate because it is so important to me. the act of just being there.
