pain is a very personal thing. it is easy to believe that no one else will ever understand the depth or character of your suffering. and the truth is that no one else can. we all hurt just a little bit differently and the most complicated part about human interaction is trying to understand those differences. if we all experience pain, then how do we gauge another's feelings? we must learn to listen to the exact tone, timbre, strain of someone else's suffering. we work, train our ears, practice. in the end, this practiced ear hears not only raw, disjointed notes of melancholy, but also full scales of joy, it is the closest to understanding we can be. and it's worth it.

not that i understand anything at all.
